Scottish storms can lift tiles, tear off ridges and bring down flashings in minutes. If you think your roof has been damaged, here is what to do.

Stay safe first

Never climb onto a storm-damaged roof yourself. Loose tiles and wet surfaces are dangerous. Check what you can from the ground and from inside the loft.

Check for damage

  • Missing, slipped or cracked tiles or slates.
  • Debris in the garden (tiles, ridge, flashing).
  • Water coming in, or damp patches on upstairs ceilings.
  • Displaced ridge tiles or lead flashing.

Photograph it for insurance

Take clear photos of any damage and debris — they help with an insurance claim. Most home policies cover storm damage.
