It is the most common complaint we hear: a conservatory that is unbearable in summer and too cold to use in winter. If that sounds familiar, here is why it happens — and what actually fixes it.
The real cause: the roof
Most conservatories have a glass or polycarbonate roof, which has almost no insulation. In summer it acts like a greenhouse, trapping heat; in winter, all your warmth escapes straight through it. The walls and windows play a part, but the roof is nearly always the biggest culprit.
Things that only help a little
- Blinds — help with glare and a bit of heat, but they are expensive for a roof and do little for winter cold.
- Solar film — reduces some summer heat but does nothing for winter.
- Portable heaters and fans — a sticking plaster that just adds to your energy bills.
The proper fix: a warm, insulated roof
The only thing that solves both problems at once is replacing the glass or polycarbonate with a warm, insulated tiled roof. It keeps the heat out in summer and in during winter, so the room stays comfortable all year — and it is far quieter when it rains. Most people tell us they finally use the room every day, right through winter.
Will I lose all the light?
No — we can fit roof windows (Velux-style) into a warm roof to keep plenty of natural light, so you get comfort and brightness.
