Waking up to a conservatory roof running with water, or misted-up windows every morning, is a common problem — especially in a Scottish winter. Here is why it happens and how to stop it.

Why condensation forms

Condensation appears when warm, moist air meets a cold surface. A glass or polycarbonate conservatory roof gets very cold, so any moisture in the air condenses on it. Drying washing, plants and poor ventilation all add moisture and make it worse.

Things that help

  • Ventilate — open trickle vents or a window for a while each day to let moist air out.
  • Reduce moisture — avoid drying washing in there, and consider a dehumidifier.
  • Keep it heated — a room that never gets cold condenses less (though that gets expensive with a poly roof).

The permanent fix

Those steps only manage the symptom. The real cause is a cold, uninsulated roof. A warm, insulated tiled roof keeps the ceiling surface warm, so condensation has nothing cold to form on — and the room stays comfortable and usable all year. It is the single most effective fix we see.
