A bit of green on the roof might look harmless, but heavy moss can genuinely shorten a roof’s life. Here is what you need to know.

Why moss is a problem

Moss holds moisture against the tiles, which speeds up wear and, in frost, can crack them. Clumps break off and block gutters and downpipes, which then causes damp. On some roofs it can even lift the edges of tiles and let water in.

Never pressure-wash it

It is tempting to blast it off, but a pressure washer can strip the protective surface off tiles and force water under them — doing more harm than the moss. Avoid it.

The safe way

The proper method is gentle soft washing and scraping, followed by a biocide treatment that kills the spores so it is slower to return. Done properly, your roof looks far better and lasts longer.
