A roof leak in the middle of a storm is stressful. Here is what to do to limit the damage until it can be fixed.
Act quickly and safely
- Contain the water — put a bucket or basin under the drip and a towel around it.
- Move valuables and furniture out of the way.
- If water is near light fittings or sockets, switch off the electrics to that area.
- If the ceiling is bulging with trapped water, a small hole (over a bucket) can release it and stop it collapsing.
- Do not go up onto the roof — especially in wet or windy weather.
Photograph the damage
Take pictures for your insurance while you wait — storm damage is usually covered.
